In the final analysis, no one rejects Christ because of lack of information and argumentation, but because the ministry of the Holy Spirit has been rejected. Ellen G. But by some this promise is not appreciated as it should be; its fulfillment is not realized as it might be. Learning, talents, eloquence, every natural or acquired endowment, may be possessed; but without the presence of the Spirit of God, no heart will be touched, no sinner won to Christ.

When His disciples are connected with Christ, when the gifts of the Spirit are theirs, even the poorest and most ignorant of them will have a power that will tell upon hearts. God makes them the channel for the outworking of the highest influence in the universe. He can be lied to Ananias and Sapphira, Acts , 4, 9 , thus indicating a Person who can be spoken to.

He can even be blasphemed, a grave sin committed against God Matt. Paul stresses that both Christ and the Holy Spirit intercede for us vss. Intercession can be done only by a personal being. In Acts , the church is described as living in the fear of the Lord and in the comfort of the Holy Spirit, suggesting that the Spirit is comforting believers. The Holy Spirit also declares things to come. Abstract power is not conscious of time.

He is the source at once of the truth human beings face and of the inspiration that enables them to recognize it as the truth and, in a measure, to understand it. If God were not the Holy Spirit, who provides understanding, his Word would be inaudible and the life of Christ without significance. It was not his intent that revelation should be inconsequential.

In the Bible, Christians are taught to believe in the Holy Spirit. We are baptized into His name as well as the name of the Father and the Son. The Spirit is Someone our prayers come to. It is one of the chief themes in the New Testament. Thus the Spirit is not merely a means to an end, but part of the blessings of salvation and is presented as such. At these dramatic events, God brought men and women, slave and free, Jews and Gentiles, together in fellowship. The Spirit was to be given as a regenerating agent, and without this the sacrifice of Christ would have been of no avail.

The power of evil had been strengthening for centuries, and the submission of men to this satanic captivity was amazing. It is the Spirit that makes effectual what has been wrought out by the world's Redeemer. It is by the Spirit that the heart is made pure. Through the Spirit the believer becomes a partaker of the divine nature. Christ has given His Spirit as a divine power to overcome all hereditary and cultivated tendencies to evil, and to impress His own character upon His church. The Holy Spirit enables the ethical life. It is only those who have the Spirit, who have the mind of the Spirit, who are in the Spirit, who are indwelt by the Spirit of God and have the Spirit of Christ, who are able to do that which is well-pleasing to God Rom.

Believers are led of the Spirit Rom. The virtues that develop in the new life in Christ are the fruit of the Spirit Gal. The love which is the fulfilling of the law is the love of the Spirit Rom. It is the regenerating of the Holy Spirit Titus that brings newness of life, which defines the life well-pleasing to God. The true believer is indwelt, governed, and directed by the powerful Person of the Holy Spirit. Such a Spirit-filled life will be no mere whitewashing of the present, but a brand-new life! When Paul describes the distribution of spiritual gifts by the Holy Spirit, he presents the Spirit as a rational Being making personal choices.

The ministry of the Spirit is completely centered in and shaped by the gospel. Redemption is His project. To be possessed by the Spirit is to be empowered by God. Encountering the Spirit, we encounter God. The world cannot accept him, because it neither sees him nor knows him.

But you know him, for he lives with you and will be in you. The Holy Spirit is not a nonpersonal power at our disposal. Rather, He is sovereign. We are His auxiliary. Therefore be wise as serpents and harmless as doves.

But beware of men, for they will deliver you up to councils and scourge you in their synagogues. You will be brought before governors and kings for My sake, as a testimony to them and to the Gentiles. But when they deliver you up, do not worry about how or what you should speak. The Spirit, the Father, and the Son are all revealed as Persons in Scripture, and all three are presented as divine.

New Testament writers refer to the deity of the Holy Spirit in a notable manner. Only God is holy, yet biblical writers call the Spirit holy no fewer than 89 times—the only member of the Godhead with this title regularly attached. The Old Testament is clear that when encountering the Spirit, one is encountering God. Equally strong is the New Testament testimony that when one encounters the Spirit, one is encountering a Person. He is divine, and a divine person. Dealing with the Spirit, we encounter the awesome presence of God Himself.

A Christianity neglectful of the Spirit is hardly biblical Christianity at all. Here, too, though God uses means of the preaching of the Word, the Spirit efficaciously accomplishes God's design: the bringing of His people to repentance and to belief in God as the God of their salvation. That this is the powerful work of God is plain from Romans , "Moreover whom He did predestinate, them he also called Now this is not the aspect in which we are principally interested in this discussion. However, we ought again to understand well that this work of the Spirit with all of its evidence of efficacious power is that which ought to be emphasized in the preaching of the gospel.

I would suggest that, perhaps, it has been the two-fold neglect of emphasis of the work of the Spirit in the giving and proclaiming of the Word and neglect of emphasis upon His saving power in regenerating and calling the elect sinner that leaves children of God at a loss concerning what the Spirit actually works.

The sad result often seems to be that in groping for knowledge of the Spirit's work, many readily seize upon, such things as speaking with tongues and miracles or a certain "inner light. There are several expressions in the New Testament which suggest the work of the Spirit in directing the way of the child of God by applying the Word of God to such an one. We read of the "fruit of the Spirit" Ephesians ; Galatians ; of being "filled with the Spirit" Ephesians ; of the "walk in the Spirit" Galatians ; Romans ,4 ; of the "sowing to the Spirit" Galatians ; of "minding the things of the Spirit.

First the Spirit as the Spirit of Christ and through the Word of God provides for the church in giving officebearers, as suggested in I Corinthians , "And God hath set some in the church, first apostles, secondarily prophets, thirdly teachers, after that miracles, then gifts of healings, helps, governments, diversities of tongues.

The same is set forth in Ephesians , "And he gave some apostles; and some, prophets; and some, evangelists; and some, pastors and teachers; for the perfecting of the saints, for the work of the ministry, for the edifying of the body of Christ. At the same time, it ought to be evident that the Spirit does not simply and mysteriously bring such men into the church to rule, to reveal mercy, and to teach.

On the contrary, passages such as I Timothy 3 show that these men must be chosen within the church on the basis of their godly walk and spiritual development. These have been called and were directed in a walk of holiness which becomes evident to the whole of the church. Of such men, who consciously and openly adhere to the Word of God in love, are chosen office bearers to assist the church -- and these are gifts of the Spirit.

The Presence of the Spirit

Perhaps we are more interested in what are called the charismatic gifts of the members of the church. We are encouraged to "covet earnestly the best gifts" I Corinthians We are reminded of the value of prophecy I Corinthians There are gifts of wisdom I Corinthians ; of knowledge II Peter ; of patience Romans ; of mercy Romans ; and many more. We are told with respect to the gifts of the Spirit of Christ that, first, these are given to every man severally as the Spirit wills I Corinthians The Spirit of Christ does provide these gifts -- and He gives according to every man's position within the body of Christ.

Secondly, we are reminded that these gifts are not for self-glorification nor to gain the praise of men, but specifically for the "edifying of the church" I Corinthians This fact too must be borne in mind. These gifts are not either somehow mystically given to some, but come in a very definite way. The Spirit uses, of course, what God gives us through our physical birth.

Not all have the same natural capabilities; some are more intelligent than others; some reveal greater capabilities in certain areas than others. The Spirit uses such natural gifts and directs their development and use in the service of the Name of God. Also, the Spirit provides, in regeneration, in seed form, the spiritual gifts of love, mercy, faith, which flower forth in conversion and godly walk. Thirdly, the Spirit through the Word of Christ directs that these gifts may so develop and grow, through the use of means, within the lives of the saints.

He uses the means of the preached Word; the diligent efforts of faithful saints; the gift of prayer to God -- in order that thus the child of God may see and rejoice in the development of these spiritual gifts.

Who Is the Holy Spirit? Third Person of the Trinity

The gifts are not just simply there in full development, but there is a growth in these which is evident in children of God. A zombie, not knowing it is dead, but struggling to maintain the appearance of something alive. Any congregation, any church, that tries to function apart from the Spirit is powerless, a Zombie-a dead body-that looks alive but is dead on the inside. It does not produce at all but only takes. Every fundraiser is for themselves: a new roof, refrigerator, or just to keep the lights on.

If all it is concerned with is within, then how is it fulfilling its purpose to be salt and light to those around it? But, there is hope! It is not the end of things if a congregation is dying or even dead as long as they recognize it and turn to God. The Holy Spirit specializes in resurrecting things that were dead! A dead church can be resurrected and made alive through repentance, a turning back to God and to His will and purpose.
